Soldiers and Skirts

Today was a special day for my family! My dad has officially retired from the Army today after 24 years of service. That is longer than I have been alive people. Of course the Army can't let anyone go without a big bang! A ceremony was held for all the retiring soldiers, and it was a beautiful moment. Families and friends smiled proudly as they watched their soldiers let go of an old life to start a new one.

Knowing that this was a more formal event I decided to go the business casual route with my outfit today. I'm going to tell you a secret; I love dressing in business casual attire. I feel like a hot, professional young woman! It sounds weird, but I instantly feel confident when I am dressed up like this. The best part is I didn't have to break my bank to look like I make a million bucks. I purchased the high-waisted skirt from Charlotte Russe yesterday for 10 dollars. That's right, only 10 dollars! It has a gorgeous cream pattern on it, so I decided to pair it with my solid cream crop top. The perfect outfit to pair with my Michael Kors dual-tone bag.

It's time for my favorite part, the shoes. The babies I'm wearing today are from Aldo. They are the perfect summer wedge because of the tan color and wooden wedge. As you get to know me, you'll learn that no heel is too high for me!

Alma's Approach: Never go to any business casual event with too short of a skirt. Pick out skirts that fall right above or on the knee, especially for high-waisted skirts. They elongate your legs and show off your figure in an appropriate way. Top it off with an awesome closed-toe heel and you are good to go!

Leave a comment below telling me what is your favorite type of skirt?

OOTD: Clouded Skull

I'm back home in Texas for the summer and I couldn't be more happy to see my family. They really are a fun bunch to be around. The only problem is all the rain we have been getting. It's safe to say that I will not be laying out by the pool anytime soon. However, I can't complain because gloomy days just give me more time to catch up on my Netflix shows.

Along with watching Netflix, I also had the opportunity to take photos of my little sister. She is graduating from high school next weekend, and did not have the time to take senior pictures. We took advantage of the rainless afternoon and went to a park down the street from our house. This whole event is what inspired my outfit for today. Photography has always been one of my interests, and I decided to look the part.

Boyfriend jeans are my favorite piece to wear on a casual day because they make an outfit look effortless. I decided to pair them with this cool, black top. Now I normally don't wear a lot of black, but this top had beautiful beading at the neckline with a skull below it. I then put on my white converse to keep the cool, and casual vibe I was going for. I kept the accessories simple with triangle studs, a white watch, and some cool sunglasses.
This outfit is definitely one of my new go-to outfits!

Alma's Approach: To add some glam to a simple outfit, try putting your hair up in a top knot. It keeps hair out of your face and keeps you refreshed on a hot, humid day.

Starting a Little Risky

Lately, I've been wanting to change up my style. I want to take a little more risk with what I wear, especially now that the summer weather is coming around. Funky chic clothing always calls my attention, but for some reason I can never get myself to purchase it. It's because I always doubt myself and ask, "Well how am I going to wear this?" I then learned that in order to be risky with my style, I have to take baby steps.

First, I went on the hunt to find an intriguing shirt. There was no need to purchase anything new because I have my little sister's closet to look into. With her permission of course. I went in and found this gorgeous box-shaped, semi-crop top. The horizontal stripes contain tiny boxes of colors ranging from blues, greens, yellows and reds. It was definitely a piece that caught my attention.

Next, I paired the top with simple blue jeans so the top could be the focus of the outfit. Cuffing the jeans gave the outfit more texture and showed off my chunky gladiator heels.

Lastly, I accessorized with my gold chain and rose gold watch. Chain necklaces are so versatile and they add instant edge to any outfit. You can never go wrong with a rose gold watch either.

I felt funky and stylish! The outfit turned out better than I expected it to. One risky trend turned my whole outfit into a masterpiece I would have never thought of before.

Alma's Approach: Choose an item you normally wouldn't wear and include it in your outfit.  It will make you feel new and different. Try asking a friend to borrow or swap clothes! This is a good way to try out a new trend before making the commitment to purchase it.
